Laryssa Kim
Now based in Brussels, Laryssa Kim is an Italo-Congolese singer and composer with an arresting set of influences. Her first forays into music took place in Rome, writing and performing with reg-gae musicians and DJs.
The landscape of Laryssa Kim’s music is impassioned and mesmerizing. Employing her voice as her central instrument, hypnotic swells of elegant lyrical forms are scattered around finely braided electronics and instrumental motifs that gather into tender song structures. Her suite of effects and looping tools propel her voice through delicately balanced compositions that place her between varying experimental practices. Presented in a live performance setting, these shifting, oneiric qualities only intensify.
It’s her most accomplished work yet, a mesmerizing odyssey guided by sharp intention.
In the hypnagogic state new thoughts associations are possible that wouldn’t be possible in the complete awake state. Half asleep we get access to the Subconscious, where the borders of reality and rationality become fleeting. And when we’re back hopefully we’ll bring some of those ideas and visions with us
Laryssa Kim is a multifaceted Italo-Congolese artist who weaves ritual-like dreamscapes where musique concrète / acousmatic music melds with ambient electronics and tender vocals into otherworldly, polymorphous compositions that abandon typical song structures.
Born in Rome, she refined her craft within Amsterdam’s contemporary dance and physical-theatre circles before making Brussels her creative home in 2013. There, she earned a Master’s in Acousmatic Composition at the Royal Conservatory of Mons and, in 2015, unveiled her epony-mous live-electronics project.
On stage, her voice floats like incense smoke one moment, then blooms with warmth and soulful intensity the next, as hypnotic soundscapes unfurl slowly: field recordings whisper from afar, se-ductive bare-bones triphop textures and aching beats pulse beneath echoing vocal loops, morp-hing into shape-shifting electroacoustic arrangements. In this oneiric realm, Laryssa Kim leads listeners into an immersive sound odyssey, a trance that awakens every sense.
